How to Estimate How Many Ounces You Need For Refills
Not sure how many ounces your container holds? Here are a few easy ways to figure it out.
Option 1: Use a Measuring Cup (Most Accurate)
Fill your empty container with water to the level you'd like us to refill it.
Pour the water into a measuring cup.
Count how many cups (or partial cups) it takes.
Use this guide:
1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
¾ cup = 6 fluid ounces
½ cup = 4 fluid ounces
¼ cup = 2 fluid ounces
Example:
If your bottle holds 1½ cups, that's:
8 oz + 4 oz = 12 fluid ounces
Option 2: Check the Label
Many bottles already tell you their size. Look near the bottom or back of containers like:
Shampoo bottles
Conditioner bottles
Hand soap bottles
Dish soap bottles
Laundry detergent bottles
You'll often see something like:
"16 fl oz (473 mL)"
That means your container holds approximately 16 fluid ounces.
Option 3: Look for Measurements on the Container
Some reusable containers already have measurements printed or molded into them.
Examples include:
Mason jars
Glass storage bottles
Refillable dispensers
Pitchers and measuring bottles
If you see ounce markings, simply use the highest ounce measurement you'd like filled.
Option 4: No Measuring Cup?
A standard coffee mug usually holds about 8–12 fluid ounces, depending on the mug.
It's not as precise as a measuring cup, but it can help you get a close estimate if that's all you have available.
A Quick Note About Fluid Ounces vs. Dry-Weight Ounces
Most of our refill products—like shampoo, hand soap, dish soap, laundry detergent, and all-purpose cleaner—are sold by fluid ounce, which measures volume.
Some products, such as powder laundry detergent, are measured by weight instead of volume.
This means:
1 cup of liquid = 8 fluid ounces
1 cup of powder laundry detergent weighs approximately 4.5 dry-weight ounces
Even though they both use the word "ounce," fluid ounces and dry-weight ounces measure different things and are not interchangeable.
We'll always let you know whether a product is sold by fluid ounces or weight when you place your order.
Don't Worry About Being Exact
Your estimate doesn’t have to be perfect. If you’re off by an ounce or two, that’s completely okay. We’ll fill your container as close to your requested amount as possible.
